Give central Jiangmen one day and add one outer area for each extra day. Stay in Pengjiang for the old city, in Xinhui for Liang Qichao, Guifeng Mountain and chenpi, or near the chosen outer destination when Chikan, a hot spring or an island is the real reason for travelling. Kaiping's diaolou already have a separate guide and should not be squeezed into every Jiangmen plan.

How to read Jiangmen
Begin with the arcade streets of Pengjiang or the history and food of Xinhui. Chikan, Gulao, Gudou and Xiachuan each change the day's transport enough to stand on their own.
Central Jiangmen tells the river-port and commercial story through arcades, markets and institutions such as the Chen Baisha Memorial Hall. Xinhui adds reform-era biography, mountain scenery and a food culture built around chenpi and Gujing roast goose. These two areas form the clearest first introduction because each can support a coherent day without a ferry or resort timetable.
The wider prefecture changes the scale. Chikan is a managed heritage resort in Kaiping; Gulao is a Heshan water-town half day; Gudou is a remote hot-spring decision; Xiachuan requires port, ferry and island transfers. None is a small extension of an afternoon in Pengjiang. The UNESCO diaolou cluster is also in Kaiping, but its research and routes stay in the separate Kaiping guide.
Arcades, market lanes and river-port streets make Jiangmen's old commercial centre readable at walking pace. The value lies in the connected neighbourhood, not one restored façade.

Use a small bowl as breakfast before the old-city walk. It is an easy first taste that does not require another county transfer.
Treat chenpi as an ingredient across dishes, then share roast goose at a named venue that fits Huicheng or Gujing.
Leave a real meal window for cooking and sharing. It belongs with a Taishan day or the night before the island, not a rushed detour.
Lei cai and lai fun are useful local clues, but one dish alone does not justify a long transfer from Pengjiang.
Walk the Thirty-Three Market Streets, choose one museum and eat a central Wuyi meal. This is the simplest arrival day.
Choose Liang Qichao's former residence with Huicheng food, or Guifeng Mountain with a slower outdoor pace. Do not force both around a distant dinner.
Use Chikan, Gulao or Gudou as the whole day's anchor. Xiachuan is not this third-day card: it needs at least one overnight and a wider transport buffer.
Jiangmen Station and Jiangmen East Station are not interchangeable. Check the hotel and first attraction before selecting a rail arrival, then confirm the current train on 12306.
Central Pengjiang supports a walk-and-taxi day. Xinhui needs its own local connection, while Heshan, Kaiping and Taishan change the intercity approach entirely.
Chikan, Gulao and Gudou require a confirmed return rather than an assumed late taxi. Save the full Chinese POI and decide the final leg before leaving the hotel.
Xiachuan begins at Shan'zui Port, not at the beach pin. Road travel, ferry and island transfer all need buffers, and weather can override the planned sequence.
Yes for overseas-Chinese history, lived-in arcade streets, regional food and slower water, mountain or island trips. It is less suitable for travellers who want famous landmarks clustered around one metro stop.
Two days cover central Jiangmen and one Xinhui or outer-area choice. Three days allow another separate direction. Add at least one night beyond that for Xiachuan Island.
Stay in Pengjiang for the old city and broad transport options. Stay in Kaiping when Chikan or the diaolou cluster is the main reason for the trip.
