Mount Danxia

For a first visit, give Changlao Peak a full day. Yangyuan is a separate area reached by scenic bus; its steep Ximei circuit is an alternative to a long Changlao hike, not an extra stop to squeeze in.

Start with location, transport, tickets and hours—then decide if it fits your plan.

About this place

Mount Danxia is one of the component areas of the UNESCO-listed China Danxia serial property.

Walking between the cliffs, rock pillars and valleys shows how varied the red-sandstone landscape is.

Routes with different times and terrain

The operator’s relaxed, experience and immersive routes differ by several hours. Choose one for your fitness level, then allow enough time for food and the return journey.

05 · Visit tips

How a visit usually unfolds

A practical visit order and pace—not a full-day itinerary.

  1. 01

Start at the northern outer gate. Scenic bus A serves the cable-car area; bus B serves Yangyuan. Ask the visitor centre about any trail or boat closures before choosing a route.

  2. 02

The easier official Changlao route goes up by cable car, then passes Tuo Stone, Baozhu Peak and Dragon King Spring towards Changlao Peak. The full published route continues through Yixian Sky towards Yinyuan Stone and Xianglong Lake; it still contains steps.

  3. 03

For a train home, choose the station before hiking. The operator lists a last scenic-area bus at 16:15 to high-speed Shaoguan Station, versus 19:10 to Shaoguan East. These are published service times, not guaranteed travel-day departures; confirm the stop and last bus at the outer gate that morning.

Practical notes

  • Steep stone and exposed rock become more difficult in rain, heat and low light.
  • Official journey times are route estimates, not a promise that every traveler will finish at the same pace.

Nearby

  • Yangyuan is a separate visitor zone within the wider scenic area.
  • Staying near the outer gate lets you start before visitors travelling from the city.
