Why visit Sunwen West Road
Sunwen West Road preserves the outline of Zhongshan's former commercial centre in arcades that mix Lingnan building habits with overseas-influenced facades. The street is most useful as evidence of how old Xiangshan traded and looked outward.
The street reopened after conservation and infrastructure work in September 2025. The freshened public realm is real, but shop occupancy and event programming still change; the enduring reason to come is the urban sequence from museum to arcade to river.

How to visit

Start at Zhongshan Museum, 197 Sunwen Middle Road. The published schedule is Tuesday–Sunday, 09:00–17:00; Monday is the regular closure.

Walk west along Sunwen Middle Road into Sunwen West Road’s arcades. The Xiangshan Commercial Culture Museum at 152 Sunwen West Road is a separate stop, not another room inside Zhongshan Museum.

Continue towards the Qijiang riverfront and Qijiang Bridge. Cross only if you want the separate Qijiang Park visit; otherwise finish the walk beside the river and eat in Shiqi.

Allow roughly 1.5–2 hours for the streets and riverside, plus museum time. This is a suggested walking allowance, not a measured door-to-door transfer; return by taxi from the road near your final stop.

Is Sunwen West Road only a shopping street?
No. Shops are part of it, but the arcades, historic commercial buildings and relationship to the river are the stronger reason to visit.
How long does a Shiqi old-town walk take?
Allow three to five hours if you include Zhongshan Museum and the river edge; the street alone can be much shorter.
Should I go in the evening?
The street and river remain useful after dark, but museums and some heritage interiors will be closed. A late-afternoon start gives both sides of the area.
