South District · an optional garden half day
Zhan Garden: decide before making the detour
Zhan Garden is a modern, privately built Lingnan-style garden completed in 1998. Visit for its pond, covered corridors and garden craftsmanship; choose Cuiheng instead if a historic household and museum are your main interest.

Why visit Zhan Garden
The garden was created in the late twentieth century. Its value is therefore not archaeological age, but the way it assembles Lingnan courtyards, waterside views and ceremonial rooms into one deliberately composed visit.
That also explains the trade-off: much of what you see is staged and maintained as a ticketed attraction. Travellers who prefer lived-in streets and documentary history will usually get more from Shiqi and Cuiheng.

How to visit
- 01
Use Zhan Garden in Beitai Village, beside National Road 105 in Zhongshan’s South District, as the taxi destination. Agree a return collection at the visitor entrance before entering.
- 02
The March 2026 city visitor notice lists 08:30–17:30 and an RMB 60 ticket. Buy the current admission product at the entrance and check which halls or activities it includes; the spring festival programme in that notice has ended.
- 03
Follow the visitor map from the main halls to the pond-side covered walks, then return to the entrance. Allow around two hours, with extra time if you add a booked activity.
- 04
Return to the agreed road-side pickup after the garden visit. Keep the ride back to Shiqi separate from any onward train departure, with time to collect bags at the hotel.
What fits on the same day
- 01
Pair it with a relaxed meal in the South District, not a museum with a hard closing time.
- 02
If you stay in Shiqi, return for dinner and keep the old-town walk for another block.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is Zhan Garden an ancient garden?
No. It was created in the late twentieth century and uses historic garden languages in a modern private project.
Is Zhan Garden essential on a first Zhongshan trip?
No. Choose it for garden design and photography; choose Cuiheng and Shiqi first for the city's historical story.
Can I combine Zhan Garden with Cuiheng?
A car can make it possible, but the visit becomes transport-led. Most first-time travellers should give Cuiheng its own block.
