Huizhou: lake, mountains and coast

Start here

For a first visit, give Huicheng one full day. Add Luofu Mountain for culture and serious walking, Xunliao Bay for a hotel-led beach break, Shuangyue Bay for the peninsula landscape, or Nankun Mountain for a slower mountain stay. Each outer area needs its own day and usually a base or return plan; combining the lake, a mountain and the coast is not a realistic two-day itinerary.

Five travel lenses

Huizhou travel profile

History and culture4.2/5
West Lake, the old city and Luofu's cultural landscape provide depth when given time.
Food legibility4.3/5
Dongjiang and Hakka dishes are recognisable, while coast meals change with place and supply.
Natural scenery4.9/5
An urban lake, two mountain regions and a long Huidong coast create exceptional range.
Urban experience3.4/5
Huicheng supports a coherent lake-and-old-city day, but the city's strongest reasons lie beyond a dense urban core.
Independent travel ease3.2/5
Huicheng is manageable; mountains and coast require deliberate last-mile and return planning.

How to read Huizhou

Choose one landscape at a time

Huicheng offers a calm lake-and-old-city day. Luofu and Nankun are separate mountain trips; Xunliao and Shuangyue Bay are two different coastal stays.

Huicheng is the compact introduction. West Lake, its bridges and gardens lead naturally towards Chaojing Gate, Shuidong Street and the Dongjiang river edge. It is an urban day with history, meals and evening life close enough to connect on foot or by short taxi rides.

Beyond Huicheng, distance changes the trip. Luofu is a large mountain-cultural destination in Boluo; Nankun is a wide highland region defined by the chosen hotel and nearby roads. Xunliao is a spread-out resort coast, while Shuangyue Bay centres on a peninsula and hilltop view. These names may share one city label, but they do not share one convenient base.

The first morning should choose the hotel

Where to stay
BaseBest forTrade-off
Huicheng near West LakeA first visit, old-city walking, Dongjiang food and the widest urban servicesEvery mountain and coast still needs a separate road journey
Boluo or near Luofu MountainAn early mountain start and a return not tied to central HuizhouNot useful for a West Lake evening or the Huidong coast
Xunliao BayA resort-led beach stay with the hotel doing most of the workRoad traffic and a poor hotel location can dominate the stay
Shuangyue Bay or PinghaiThe paired-bay viewpoint, peninsula geography and an overnight coast dayViewpoint access, heat and return transport need separate checks
A specific Nankun Mountain propertyBamboo, slower walks and time around one mountain baseThe wider area is too dispersed for a generic hotel search

Eat Dongjiang dishes in town and seafood only on the coast

  1. 01

    A light Huicheng breakfast

Choose morning tea with company or a bowl of Hengli-style soup noodles alone. Keep enough appetite for a proper lunch.

  2. 02

    One complete Dongjiang meal

Share salt-baked chicken with stuffed tofu or preserved-mustard pork, then add greens and rice instead of ordering every famous dish.

  3. 03

    A short Luofu pause

Tofu pudding works when it appears near the chosen route. It should not delay the descent or turn into a restaurant hunt.

  4. 04

    Seafood with clear numbers

On the Huidong coast, confirm species, unit price, weight, processing charge and cooking method before the kitchen starts.

Keep Huicheng first, then choose one outer direction

See 7, 10 and 14-day Guangdong itineraries
01

Day 1 · West Lake and old city

Walk one connected lake section, use lunch for Dongjiang food, then finish around Chaojing Gate and Shuidong Street.

02

Day 2 · choose Luofu or the coast

Use Luofu for a full mountain-cultural day. If rest by the sea matters more, transfer to Xunliao or Shuangyue Bay and stay overnight instead.

03

Day 3 · continue the chosen landscape

Give the coast a second slow morning, or use another day for Luofu after returning to Huicheng. Nankun Mountain is a separate overnight chapter, not a spare third-day add-on.

The last road leg decides whether the day works

  • 01

Huizhou North, Huizhou South, Huizhou Station and the intercity stations serve different parts of a spread-out city. Select the arrival only after checking the hotel and first stop.

  • 02

Huicheng supports walking, buses and short taxis around West Lake and the old city. It does not remove the road cost to Boluo, Longmen or Huidong.

  • 03

For Luofu Mountain, save the exact scenic-area entrance and confirm both the outward and return connection. Do not plan around the last possible bus or cableway.

  • 04

For Xunliao and Shuangyue Bay, save the exact hotel as well as the area name. Holiday traffic can make an apparent day trip longer than an overnight transfer.

  • 05

For Nankun Mountain, arrange the exact property, local road transfer and return before arrival. A generic mountain pin is not a transport plan.

Practical questions, answered

Is Huizhou worth visiting?

Yes if an urban lake, mountain culture or a slower coastal stay matches the trip. It is less suitable for travellers expecting every highlight to sit around one compact city centre.

How many days do I need in Huizhou?

One day covers Huicheng. Add one full day for Luofu Mountain, or at least one night for Xunliao or Shuangyue Bay. Nankun Mountain is better with one or two nights of its own.

Should I choose Xunliao Bay or Shuangyue Bay?

Choose Xunliao for a hotel-led resort stay and easier beach time. Choose Shuangyue Bay when the peninsula landscape and viewpoint are the main reason, then check current access and heat.

Can Huizhou be a day trip from Shenzhen?

Huicheng can work after checking the actual station and both last-mile legs. Luofu, the Huidong coast and Nankun Mountain should not be treated as the same easy day trip.

Do I need a car in Huizhou?

Not for a compact Huicheng day. A car or confirmed transfer becomes much more useful for Nankun Mountain and parts of the coast, but parking, congestion and the return still need planning.
