Paifang Street

Paifang Street follows Taiping Road through Chaozhou’s old city. Start at one end, stop for the arches and side lanes, and choose a meal before the snack stalls fill you up. Kaiyuan Temple and Guangji Gate are useful nearby stops.

Start with location, transport, tickets and hours—then decide if it fits your plan.

03 · About this place

About this place

Official old-city routes repeatedly use Paifang Street as their central axis before branching to Guangji Gate, the riverfront and nearby heritage buildings.

It is also the easiest place to combine built heritage with the everyday practices visitors associate with Chaozhou: snacks, tea, craft shops and evening walking.

Alternate monument and ordinary street life

The strongest walk repeatedly leaves and rejoins the main axis. That reveals how ceremonial archways, shopfronts and residential lanes occupy the same old-city fabric.

05 · Visit tips

How a visit usually unfolds

A practical visit order and pace—not a full-day itinerary.

  1. 01

Use 牌坊街太平路 as the walking destination. Vehicles may have to stop outside the restricted old-city streets, so agree the exact drop-off and do not ask the driver to continue into the pedestrian section.

  2. 02

A suggested walk runs along Taiping Road to the Kaiyuan Road junction, with a temple stop if open. Turn east along Dongmen Street towards Guangji Gate when you want the river view; keep side-lane detours short so you can return to the main road easily.

  3. 03

Allow roughly 1.5–2 hours for the street and a short side-lane visit, excluding a full meal and temple admission. Return to your agreed pickup point outside the pedestrian area, rather than expecting a car to collect you under an archway.

Practical notes

  • Crowds concentrate around the most photographed arches; side lanes are residential, so keep doorways clear and voices down.
  • Shop opening hours do not define the accessibility of the public street.

Nearby

  • Kaiyuan Temple sits just off the old-city core.
  • Guangji Gate and the Han River are an easy continuation to the east.
