双生肠粉(牌坊街总店)

What to order

Start with one beef-and-mushroom rice roll (牛肉香菇肠粉) each. Add beef-tendon-ball soup (牛筋丸汤) if you want a fuller meal.

Before you go

The branch name says Paifang Street, but the listed address is on Xiyuan Road. Check the Chinese address before leaving your hotel; this is a separate stop from the Kaiyuan–Taiping Road snack walk.

十八曲鱼饺(西马路总店)

What to order

Ask for a bowl of fish dumplings (鱼饺). Fish rolls (鱼册) are another option; ask whether you can combine them in one bowl before ordering a second portion.

Before you go

Choose a bowl when you still want room for Taiping Road snacks. The fish dumpling wrapper is made with fish, so its pale colour does not mean it is a vegetarian rice dumpling.

开元上西平咸水粿(开元店)

What to order

Try a small serving of salted rice cups (咸水粿), topped with preserved radish (菜脯). Ask about chilli before the topping is added.

Before you go

This is a snack beside the Kaiyuan–Shangxiping junction, rather than a full lunch. Use the Kaiyuan branch address; listings for the Changli Road branch refer to a different shop.

胡荣泉(牌坊街店)

What to order

Look for duck-mother dumplings (鸭母捻), a sweet soup with filled glutinous-rice dumplings, or a taro-paste cake (芋泥饼). Choose what is available that day.

Before you go

Treat this as a dessert stop on Taiping Road. If you are saving room for beef hotpot, share a cake or have one bowl rather than ordering every sweet on display.

阿彬牛肉火锅(南较总店)

What to order

Begin with two available beef cuts, such as diaolong (吊龙) and wuhuazhi (五花趾), plus handmade beef balls (手打鲜牛丸). Add greens or kway teow only after checking the serving sizes.

Before you go

Ask for the weight and price of each plate, and whether broth and dipping sauces cost extra. A solo diner can ask for smaller plates; a fish-dumpling bowl is the simpler choice when that is unavailable.

官塘兄弟牛肉火锅(官塘总店)

What to order

Ask which cuts are available. Diaolong (吊龙), wuhuazhi (五花趾) and beef balls (牛肉丸) appear in the branch listing; start with a few shared plates before adding more.

Before you go

Allow for a separate ride out and back, and check your return transport before dinner. For one night in the old city, the Nanjiao option is easier to fit around sightseeing.

At the table

A little ordering know-how

Beef hotpot

For beef hotpot, check the plate weight, broth charge and sauce charge before ordering. Two or three people can start with two cuts and beef balls, then decide whether to add vegetables or noodles. This is an ordering suggestion, not a fixed set menu.

Food priced by weight

If you order seafood or another item sold by weight elsewhere, ask whether the quote is per jin (500 g) or per kilogram, confirm the weight before cooking, and ask whether preparation costs extra. A market-price label needs a current quote.

Braised goose

For braised goose, ask whether the shop will sell a small mixed portion suitable for one person. If it only offers large plates, share with companions or choose a bowl meal.

Allergies and dietary needs

For allergies or dietary restrictions, show the ingredient in Chinese and ask about the filling, broth and sauce. Fish dumplings, beef balls and savoury toppings should not be judged by appearance alone.

Leave time for tea

Between Kaiyuan Road snacks and dinner, sit down for gongfu tea. Before settling in, ask whether the tea charge is per person or per table.

Before you go

What should I eat in Chaozhou on a first visit?

Choose a filled rice roll for breakfast, fish dumplings for a bowl meal and beef hotpot to share at dinner. Salted rice cups, duck-mother dumplings and taro cakes fit smaller stops in the old city. Gongfu tea is worth leaving a seated break for.

Can I eat well in Chaozhou alone?

Yes. One rice roll at Shuangsheng, a fish-dumpling bowl at Shibaqu and one small snack are straightforward solo orders. For hotpot, ask about small plates and the minimum order before choosing a table.

Is Guantang beef hotpot on the Paifang Street walk?

Guantang is outside the old-city core and needs a separate journey. Choose the Nanjiao branch if you want a city dinner after sightseeing; choose Guantang only when you have allowed for transport there and back.

Do I need to eat in Shantou as well?

Chaozhou and Shantou share a wider Chaoshan food tradition, but their restaurants and neighbourhoods belong to different city visits. These branch addresses are in Chaozhou; plan a separate stay or journey if Shantou is also on your itinerary.
