About this place

Nanfeng Ancient Kiln (南風古灶) in Shiwan is a ceramic scenic area known for hillside dragon kilns, workshop streets, ceramic sculpture and optional pottery DIY. It shows why Shiwan pottery is part of Foshan’s local identity, not only a souvenir shop.

Shiwan’s ceramic industry is one of Foshan’s deepest local stories still visible on the ground. The kilns make that story physical: stepped roofs climbing the slope, workshops, and clay process.

Entry windows, evening openings and pottery workshops vary by period. Check the scenic-area notice before travel and confirm any hands-on session separately rather than assuming it is bundled with entry.

Geographically it belongs to Shiwan, separate from the Zumiao core and from Shunde’s Daliang gardens—plan transport as its own transfer.

Dragon kilns and ceramic craft on the ground

Nanfeng is the craft half of the classic Chancheng day. Dragon kilns, workshops and ceramic streets explain why Foshan is more than a temple postcard.

Visit order

Roofs first, DIY second, shopping last

Check the day’s entry window before lunch and arrive with transfer buffer. Walk kiln exteriors first, then an optional pre-confirmed pottery session, then shops.

A simple lunch near the kiln streets keeps the craft day practical. Return to Lingnan Tiandi for dinner.

Hands-on

Pottery time is a different visit length

If you join wheel throwing or hand-building, budget well beyond a photo loop—especially with children. Demo performances of throwing or calligraphy may appear through the day.

05 · Visit tips

How a visit usually unfolds

A practical visit order and pace—not a full-day itinerary.

  1. 01

Transfer once: metro toward Shiwan plus the final walk, or take a direct taxi from Zumiao. Follow live station signage and do not hop back and forth between districts.

  2. 02

Walk the kiln complex first—dragon-kiln exteriors, stepped roofs, chimneys—before souvenir shops. Look for the relationship between kiln body and hillside.

  3. 03

If you want pottery DIY (wheel throwing, hand-building, painting), confirm the session early; it can take longer than a quick walkthrough and needs its own buffer.

  4. 04

Allow 2.5–4 hours. A simple lunch near the kiln streets keeps the craft day practical.

  5. 05

Return to Chancheng for dinner near Lingnan Tiandi. Do not attempt Qinghui Garden the same evening.

Practical notes

  • Open yards and slopes get hot—carry water and a hat.
  • DIY and performance demo slots change; confirm on arrival.
  • Some travelers finish a photo loop in ~90 minutes; if you skip DIY, you may not need half a day—but do not cut the visit so short that the kilns never register.

Nearby

  • Return to Zumiao / Lingnan Tiandi for dinner.
  • Ceramic shopping streets around the complex if you still have energy.
  • Shunde and Xiqiao remain other days.
