Why visit Dapeng Fortress
Dapeng Fortress was established in 1394 as a coastal defence settlement. The South Gate, later military residences and surviving domestic buildings connect the site to conflicts and maritime routes that shaped the wider Shenzhen and Hong Kong region.
The site became Shenzhen's first nationally protected cultural site. That designation matters, but the visit gains depth from the combination of protected buildings, small museum rooms and ordinary lanes rather than from one monumental structure.

How to divide the fortress visit
The Dapeng New District Museum manages several interiors rather than one large central building. The South Gate, Lai Enjue residence, Yiwen Building and other houses each explain a different part of the settlement. Current access can vary by room.
Start with the gate and one military-history interior, then return to the lanes. This keeps the visit connected to the living scale of the settlement and leaves enough time to notice houses, thresholds and the shape of the streets.
