Walking Zhaoqing Ancient City Wall and Piyun Tower

Zhaoqing retains a largely complete city wall around old Duanzhou. Its roughly 2.8 km perimeter preserves the Song-era layout; whether you can walk on top is a separate question of current access.

01

Why visit Zhaoqing Ancient City Wall

Construction began in 1053. Repeated repairs changed the masonry without erasing the outline of the old city.

Piyun Tower and brickwork from different periods leave the repair history visible on the wall.

Start at Piyun Tower

Look for different generations of brickwork

Piyun Tower is an easy landmark on the northern wall. Stand back before approaching the masonry: differences in brick colour, size and mortar show why an old wall should not be read as one untouched building from a single date.

The wall also defended a low-lying river city against floods. Its sloping faces and thick base make more sense when you remember that the Xijiang was a threat as well as a trade route.

Old city in use

A preserved wall does not guarantee a wall-top circuit

For a short visit, follow the public pavement along Songcheng Road around Piyun Tower. If the signed stair entrance is closed, the street-level visit still works. Do not enter an unmarked gate or treat a repair barrier as a missing piece of the monument.

For a longer outing, continue to Yuejiang Tower and the riverfront. Mei'an is another option to the west only if its current admission has been confirmed; allow for the separate journey.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you walk the whole Zhaoqing Ancient City Wall?

The historic wall is largely preserved, but an uninterrupted walk on top is not confirmed. Check the signed entrances and current restrictions; allow a street-level walk as your alternative.

Is Piyun Tower a separate attraction?

No. Visit Piyun Tower as the main orientation point within the ancient-wall walk.

What should I pair with the wall?

Yuejiang Tower adds a museum and riverfront visit. Mei'an is a quieter heritage option to the west if it is admitting visitors; confirm that before travelling there.
