Why visit Yongqing Fang & Enning Road
Enning Road is one of the clearest places to see the climatic logic of Guangzhou's qilou arcades. The covered pavement, narrow frontage and deep shop-house plan were made for heat, rain and street trade, and parts of that pattern remain in daily use.
The restored Yongqing Fang blocks also show how Guangzhou is reusing old neighbourhoods. They are attractive and convenient, but the commercial finish is only one layer. Walking farther out keeps the area's residents, opera history and ordinary street scale in view.
