Why visit Nantou Ancient Town
The walled town built in 1394 later served as an administrative centre for Xin'an County and as part of the region's coastal defence. That gives Nantou a direct connection to the history shared by present-day Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
The current district also shows what happens after heritage enters a dense modern city. Restored fronts and curated businesses sit beside lived-in lanes. The tension is visible, and it is more useful than pretending the whole place belongs to one period.
