Choose the transfers you want to avoid
Choose Futian for the civic centre and cross-city rail connections, Nanshan for Nantou and the western waterfront, or Luohu for Dongmen and the border crossing. Check the actual hotel-to-station walk before booking.
A room near your arrival station may still be a long journey from your evening in Shekou.
A lower room rate is not a saving if every day starts with a long cross-city ride. First place your two most important days on the map. Then use arrival and departure as a tiebreaker, rather than letting one station decide the whole stay.

The first-visit answer
For a two- to four-night first visit divided between Luohu and Nanshan, Futian is the most forgiving base. Choose Nanshan instead when two or more days end around Nantou, Houhai or Shekou. Choose Luohu when Dongmen and a Luohu border crossing matter more than the western waterfront. Bao'an is usually a flight-night or west-side decision, not the default sightseeing base.
Match the area to your visit
Adjust for arrival and departure
Futian is the natural first place to compare, especially when the first or last day stays in the central city. Still check the hotel entrance rather than booking from the station name alone.
Luohu can simplify an early crossing and puts Dongmen close by. It is a weaker choice when several evenings end in Nanshan or Bao'an.
Use an airport-area room for a genuinely late arrival or early departure. For a normal daytime flight, compare the airport journey from your sightseeing base before giving up a more useful city location.
One train does not automatically justify staying by the station. Choose the north-station area only when the rail deadline is early, the stay is very short or most of the city itinerary has already ended.
Once you open a booking site
Check crossings, footbridges and the final approach with luggage. A short straight-line distance can hide an awkward entrance.
Map the return from Shekou, Houhai or Dongmen at the time you expect to leave. The evening return often reveals more than the easy morning departure.
Look for noise, renovation, smoke and lift waits. Reviews of the lobby or breakfast do not answer whether the room will let you sleep.
For two to four nights, packing and check-in usually cost more than one extra metro ride. Move only for a Dapeng overnight or a hard early-departure constraint.
