Paifang Square and southern Star Lake
- Where to look
- Look around Paifang Square (牌坊广场), at the southern edge of the lake.
- Best for
- A first visit combining the lake, old Duanzhou and meals in town. Stay here for both nights if Dinghushan is a single day trip.
- Tradeoff
- A lake-view room is not necessarily near a Seven Star Crags entrance. The public square and the ticketed scenic area are different destinations.
- Before booking
- Map the hotel door to Paifang Square and separately to the scenic-area gate you plan to use. Check recent room reviews for road noise.

Old Duanzhou around Songcheng Road
- Where to look
- Use Piyun Tower (披云楼) and Songcheng Road (宋城路) as landmarks for the northern old-city edge.
- Best for
- Travellers who prefer the wall, museums and ordinary neighbourhood meals to waking beside the lake.
- Tradeoff
- Seven Star Crags and Dinghushan still require separate journeys. A busy market street can be convenient for breakfast but noisy early in the morning.
- Before booking
- Check vehicle access and lifts if carrying large bags; do not assume a small old-street property has either. Confirm that reception can register your passport before reserving.

Kengkou, near Dinghushan’s entrance
- Where to look
- Search around Shangshan Road (上山路) and the Dinghushan scenic-area ticket office, then check the exact distance.
- Best for
- An early mountain start, or a trip that spends most of its time in Dinghu.
- Tradeoff
- This is a different base from central Duanzhou. Repeated lake and old-city visits add journeys; moving here for just one short visit also means moving your luggage.
- Before booking
- Ask the hotel to confirm the entrance used by your driver and a return pickup. Zhaoqing East railway station and the mountain entrance are separate places: check both legs before booking.
