Lake edge, old city and Xijiang

Three Zhaoqing walks: Yanqian, the city wall and the Xijiang

Choose a public lakeside stroll, a short wall walk or Yuejiang Tower followed by the river. Each starts and finishes in one district.

Timings are planning estimates including breaks and transfers; adjust for weather, access and your actual journey.

The timings below are relaxed estimates including stops, not measured walking times. Take a taxi or bus to the start without luggage and finish with a return to the same hotel. Pick one walk for an afternoon.

East Gate Square to Bao Huan Avenue

From the square, find the public Bao Huan Avenue (宝环大道) approach to Yanqian. Stay outside the Seven Star Crags admission gate: this walk follows the village shore.

    02

    Follow the lake around Yanqian

Continue along the public lakeside road, looking across the water to the crags. The bends change which peaks overlap. Stop on public space without assuming a café terrace is a through route.

  3. 01:15

    03

Turn back before the light fades

Return by the same Bao Huan Avenue route. The raised Yanqian Cloud Trail (岩前云道) is a separate 1.31 km structure around Xianggang Hill; its ramps, stairs and viewing platform are not this level waterfront walk. Add it only after checking its access and your energy.

02

Walk 2 · Piyun Tower and the north wall

Start and finish
Start and finish near Piyun Tower on Songcheng Road.
When to start
Begin in daylight; the street-level walk does not depend on wall-top entry.
Ending the walk
Return along Songcheng Road to Piyun Tower, then take a taxi back or eat in the old town.
Fitness
Allow 90 minutes to two hours with pauses; shorten at any road crossing.

See Piyun Tower from street level

Start opposite the tower at a safe viewing point. Notice the tower above the wall and the difference between its roof silhouette and the lower brick defences. Use the marked crossing when changing sides.

    02

Follow the north wall along Songcheng Road

Walk east along the publicly accessible pavement beside the north wall for about 20–30 minutes, then turn back. Compare brick colour, mortar and repairs. Do not follow an opening in the masonry unless signed for visitors.

  3. 01:15

    03

Return to the tower and stop for a meal

Finish around Piyun Tower rather than trying to cover all 2.8 km of the wall. Mei’an is a separate temple visit: confirm that it is receiving visitors before adding a taxi journey there.

Walk 3 · Yuejiang Tower to Chongxi Pagoda

Start and finish
Start at Yuejiang Tower (阅江楼); finish at Chongxi Pagoda (崇禧塔).
When to start
Begin within the confirmed museum opening window.
Ending the walk
Finish before heat or riverside weather becomes uncomfortable.
Fitness
2–3 hours, mainly level after the museum steps.

    Yuejiang Tower: regiment and courtyard

Allow 60–90 minutes for the Ye Ting Independent Regiment displays and the four-sided courtyard. Look at the differing roof shapes before leaving; this is a historic museum building, not a guaranteed panoramic tower climb.

    02

Jiangbin Road to the Xijiang promenade

Use a marked crossing on Jiangbin Road (江滨路) to reach the riverside. Follow the public promenade towards Chongxi Pagoda, keeping the river beside you; use the map to confirm the direction before setting off. Compare the high embankment with the older buildings set back from it.

  3. 02:10

    03

    Finish outside Chongxi Pagoda

Allow a short exterior stop where the pagoda and the river can be seen together. Interior access is optional and must be confirmed locally. Arrange a pickup near the pagoda; retracing the whole riverside stretch is not required.
