02
Guangzhou South or Guangzhou East? Look beyond the train time.

Both have direct high-speed trains from Hong Kong West Kowloon. In booking menus, South may appear as Guangzhounan (广州南), and East as Guangzhoudong (广州东). They are different stations, well apart; a ticket to one does not bring you to the other.
Guangzhou Railway Station (广州站) and Guangzhou Baiyun (广州白云站) are also separate stations. Use the exact station named on your selected West Kowloon service rather than choosing one simply because it says Guangzhou.
03
Book the right station, with the document you will carry.
MTR lists 12306, designated ticket agents and station counters or machines as purchase channels. Online booking is useful for getting a seat before arriving. If account or passport verification stalls, a staffed counter is a fallback, although it cannot guarantee seats on your preferred train.
For a fare reference, the published short-haul chart checked on 2 October 2026 lists RMB 215 for second class to either South or East. This is a published fare, not a quote for every departure. The actual price depends on the selected service and class; Hong Kong dollar prices also change with the monthly conversion. Read the final booking total, including any agent fee.
- 1
Search Hong Kong West Kowloon → your chosen Guangzhou station
Compare the departure time, arrival time and hotel transfer. Check the timetable for your travel date: MTR currently publishes separate schedules before and from 11 October 2026.
- 2
Check the passenger details before paying
Use the document type and personal details requested by the booking service. Carry the same original passport or applicable travel permit used for the ticket, including for children. A booking confirmation does not replace the travel document.
- 3
Check entry permission separately
Being allowed to visit Hong Kong does not establish permission to enter mainland China. Check the rules for your nationality, document and itinerary with Hong Kong Immigration and the National Immigration Administration, or your Chinese consulate. If relying on visa-free transit, check its onward-journey and permitted-port conditions before choosing transport.
04
Hong Kong → Guangzhou: clear both borders before the train.
West Kowloon connects by walkways to Austin station on the Tuen Ma Line and Kowloon station on the Tung Chung Line and Airport Express. Allow for the walk into the high-speed station after your local train; reaching Kowloon station is not the same as reaching the departure gate.
For a first trip with a passport, we suggest reaching West Kowloon about 90 minutes before departure, with more time when queues or extra entry processing are likely. MTR says the usual station procedures take around 30–45 minutes and passport holders should allow extra. The 30-minute cutoff below is a deadline, not an arrival target.
- 1
B1 · Identity and ticket check
Present the document used for booking at the self-service gate or staff assistance counter. This check stops 30 minutes before departure. If your passport will not scan, ask staff promptly.
- 2
Security → B3 · Hong Kong exit and mainland entry
Follow the baggage check signs, then complete both immigration procedures in West Kowloon before the train. Keep your travel document and any required entry paperwork accessible.
- 3
B3 · Find your train and board
Match the train number and boarding gate to your booking and the departure display. MTR says boarding gates open 15 minutes before departure and close five minutes before. Keep your original document handy for the arrival exit too.
05
Guangzhou → Hong Kong: clear both borders after the train.
For the return, search from Guangzhou South (广州南) or Guangzhou East (广州东) to Hong Kong West Kowloon (香港西九龙). Choose the Guangzhou station that suits your departure address and the actual train for your date. The Hong Kong departure procedure above runs in a different order from this journey.
We suggest reaching your Guangzhou station about an hour before departure for a first trip with luggage. This is a planning allowance, not an official boarding cutoff. Leave additional time to reach the correct station, and follow the gate closing time shown for your train.
- 1
In Guangzhou · Check the station and boarding gate
Carry the original document used for booking. Follow the station’s ticket, identity and baggage checks, then match the train number to the departure board. South and East are separate stations; confirm the Chinese station name before taking a taxi or metro.
- 2
At West Kowloon · B4 platform to B2 immigration
After the train arrives, follow the signs from the B4 platform to the B2 arrival level. MTR places mainland exit and Hong Kong entry formalities at West Kowloon for this direction. Keep the documents required for Hong Kong entry accessible.
- 3
Exit the gates, then continue into Hong Kong
Complete the ticket exit check and follow the signs toward your local connection. For a flight, add the walk to Kowloon station, Airport Express, airline check-in and airport procedures. The published train time does not establish a safe flight connection.
06
Landing at HKIA? Decide on the ferry while you are still airside.

The SkyPier ferry to Guangzhou Pazhou is for airport transfer passengers. Pazhou is in Haizhu, near the Canton Fair complex. It may suit an address around Pazhou, but compare the ferry wait and the onward ride to your hotel. A ferry arriving in Nansha is a different arrival, not another name for Pazhou.
- 1
Before flying, confirm the sailing and baggage transfer
Ask the ferry operator whether your flight arrival leaves enough time for a same-day Pazhou sailing and how your checked bags will be transferred. Keep the flight confirmation, ferry booking and required mainland entry documents together.
- 2
At HKIA, follow signs to Transfer Area E2
Do not clear Hong Kong immigration or collect your checked bags for this service. Go to the mainland/Macao ferry ticketing counter and show your airline baggage-tag receipt. HKIA requires arrival at the counter at least 60 minutes before sailing with checked bags, or 30 minutes without them; remain in the restricted area.
- 3
If the ferry does not fit, use a land connection
Once you have cleared Hong Kong immigration, you cannot return to use the SkyPier ferry. For rail, check that you may enter Hong Kong, collect your bags, take the Airport Express to Kowloon and follow the connection to West Kowloon. Include immigration, baggage collection and the high-speed station checks before choosing a train. For an airport coach, compare the actual Guangzhou stop and border arrangements described below.
07
A coach works when the stops work for you.
Compare the precise Guangzhou drop-off address with your hotel, plus the Hong Kong boarding point. A service sold as ‘Guangzhou’ may still leave you with a substantial city transfer. Road traffic and border queues also affect the trip.
HKIA lists Guangzhou coach services and operators including CTG BUS and Eternal East. Its mainland/Macao coach ticketing and boarding centre is on Level 3 of Terminal 2. Follow the current airport signs after completing the Hong Kong arrival procedures; this is separate from the airside ferry counter.
08
Keep the last leg to your hotel in the plan.

For a first arrival, we would leave a half day free of timed sightseeing. Add your trip to the Hong Kong departure point, the border-check allowance, the booked train or ferry time, and the Guangzhou transfer. The fastest train time only covers one part of that morning or afternoon.
- 1
Save a usable hotel address
Keep the Chinese name, branch, street address, phone number and booking confirmation offline. For a late arrival, tell the hotel when you expect to reach reception.
- 2
From South or East, choose metro or the taxi rank
Follow the station signs for your onward transport. At South, compare Line 2 toward the old city; at East, check Lines 1 and 3 against the hotel’s nearest station. With awkward luggage or after the last useful metro, find the signed taxi queue and show the address.
- 3
From Pazhou or a coach stop, check the exact arrival address
Use the ferry terminal or named coach stop as the starting point for directions. For a booked car, agree on the pickup location and how to contact the driver before you lose the connection you used in Hong Kong.
Common questions
Before you book, a few answers.
Where do I clear immigration from Guangzhou to Hong Kong?
After the train, at Hong Kong West Kowloon. Follow the B4 platform signs to B2 for mainland exit and Hong Kong entry. In the opposite direction, both checks take place at West Kowloon before boarding.
Is there a direct train from Hong Kong to Guangzhou?
Yes. Direct high-speed trains leave Hong Kong West Kowloon for Guangzhou South and Guangzhou East. Select the exact station when booking; the old-city Guangzhou Railway Station is another station.
How long does the journey take?
Some current West Kowloon–South services take 48 minutes; published East examples are around 1½–2 hours. Add the trip to West Kowloon, border procedures and the ride from the arrival station to your hotel. Choose by the full journey and the timetable for your date.
How much does the train cost?
The short-haul published fare chart checked on 2 October 2026 shows RMB 215 in second class to either South or East. Check the actual fare for your train and class in the booking system, including the currency and any booking fee.
Can I use visa-free transit for a day trip?
Do not assume a Hong Kong–Guangzhou–Hong Kong return qualifies. Mainland visa-free transit requires onward travel to a third country or region and has nationality, port and other conditions. Check whether a different visa-free entry policy or a visa applies to your own documents and trip.
What is the last train to Guangzhou?
Look up South or East for your exact date in the official timetable or booking system. West Kowloon’s overall closing services are not the last train for every destination. Check whether the arrival leaves you a usable metro or a planned taxi ride, too.
What if my flight is late or I miss the train?
Check your booking’s change rules and contact the railway service or agent immediately. For the ferry, speak to the operator before entering Hong Kong. If there is no confirmed crossing left, arrange a Hong Kong overnight stay and notify your Guangzhou hotel; do not count on finding another departure at an unfamiliar checkpoint.
