03 / Arrival & your first night

How do I get from the airport to my hotel?

Prepare your hotel address, distinguish Guangzhou CAN from Shenzhen SZX, and choose transport after landing, including luggage and late-night arrivals.

The short answer

Save the address. Confirm the terminal. Then choose the ride.

Before flying, save your hotel’s full Chinese name, branch and address, and agree on late check-in if needed. After landing, collect your bags and check the time and available transport. For a late arrival with luggage, an official taxi or a clearly arranged pickup can be easier than an uncertain last train.

Give yourself an address you can show someone.

Illustration of a saved hotel address on a phone, a matching paper backup and a passport.
Preparation illustrated. Save your own booking, including the branch and Chinese address; no real hotel is shown.

Save a screenshot of the Chinese hotel name, street address, branch name, telephone number and booking confirmation. A translated brand name can point to several properties. Ask the hotel for the correct entrance or drop-off instructions if the booking map is unclear.

If you land after midnight, confirm the room is held for the date and time you will reach reception. Landing shortly after midnight and checking in later that afternoon are different bookings. Keep your original passport accessible for check-in, rather than packed at the bottom of a suitcase.

For an arranged pickup, agree on the flight number, terminal, meeting point, contact method, luggage capacity and what happens if the flight is delayed. An “airport hotel” may still require a drive; ask whether its shuttle serves your terminal and runs at your arrival time.

CAN and SZX are different arrivals.

CAN · Guangzhou Baiyun · 广州白云国际机场

Check your airline’s terminal information again on travel day. T1 flights moved to T3 from 7 May 2026, and Airport South station serving T1 was suspended. For T2, look for Airport North (机场北) on Metro Line 3. T3 uses different access: Baiyun Airport East (白云机场东) on the intercity railway, or a shuttle connection to the metro. Do not follow an old T1 metro screenshot to T3.

SZX · Shenzhen Bao’an · 深圳宝安国际机场

The airport’s Metro Line 11 station is Airport (机场站). Check the onward transfer and the walk from your hotel’s nearest station before choosing rail. Follow current terminal signs for taxis or booked-car pickup; the two collection areas are not interchangeable.

Compare the whole trip to the door.

Three airport transport choices: rail on the left, a designated taxi queue in the middle, and checking a booked car on the right.
From left: rail, taxi, booked pickup. These are illustrated choices; use the locations below and signs at the airport to find your ride.

Metro or intercity rail

A useful choice when services are still running, your hotel is convenient to a station and your luggage is manageable. Check every transfer’s last departure, not just the airport train. Include walking, waiting and the final station exit in your decision.

Official taxi queue

Follow the airport’s taxi signs and join the designated queue. Show the saved Chinese address and check how you can pay before leaving. Keep the receipt. This may be simpler with large bags, children or a late arrival, although queues and road traffic still take time.

Booked car or hotel pickup

Use the pickup point specified by the booking, then match the car and driver details before boarding. Tell the provider you are ready after collecting luggage. If the app’s map and signs seem to disagree, ask airport staff to identify the named area before walking further.

Where do I actually get in the car?

First match your terminal and the kind of car you are taking. Taxi signs lead to a queue; a booked car has a particular pickup area in your order. Check the floor as well as the door or parking-building number, and follow any updated signs on the day.

  • CAN · Terminal 2

Taxi · arrivals level, outside doors 50 and 53

Follow the long-distance or short-distance taxi signs through the east or west sides of the Ground Transportation Centre (GTC). App-booked cars use P8, levels 2 and 3; confirm your exact pickup level in the order.

  • CAN · Terminal 3

Taxi · domestic arrivals door 72 / international arrivals door 75

App-booked cars use the P12 parking building, levels 1M and 2. These are different from the taxi queues. Keep the app’s named floor and zone visible while following the signs.

  • SZX · Airport taxi queue

    GTC Level 2 · outside east-side door 13

Follow “出租车 / Taxi” to the boarding platform. Have your Chinese hotel address ready, confirm payment before setting off and keep the receipt.

  • SZX · App-booked cars

    Area A · outside door 15 / Area B · GTC Level 1

Area A is reached from the south-side door 15 and down to the pickup lanes; Area B is on Level 1. Follow the area, lane and meeting instructions in your booking, rather than joining the door 13 taxi queue.

If it is late, decide after baggage collection.

Your flight’s landing time is not the time you will reach a platform. Immigration, bags, walking and finding the right exit can change the choice. If you cannot confirm the entire rail journey is still possible, use the official taxi area or contact your arranged pickup.

If your hotel is in another city, check that journey separately. A flight to Guangzhou is not an arrival in central Shenzhen, and a late bus mentioned in a travel post may no longer run. If you decide to stay near the airport, confirm an actual room and a way to reach it before setting off.

Let reception know if you will arrive later than agreed. Keep enough battery for the address, payment and communication. If connectivity fails, show the saved address at the airport information desk and ask for the correct taxi queue.

If something goes wrong

There’s a next step.

The driver and I cannot find each other

Stay at a signed, identifiable pickup area. Send the terminal, floor and zone or bay number using the booking’s contact method; a photo of the sign can help. Ask staff if the driver is directing you to a different level. Do not keep moving while giving the driver an old location.

My hotel offers a shuttle. Can I just turn up?

Ask the hotel first. Confirm the terminal, pickup place, timetable or on-demand procedure, and whether you must call after collecting bags. A shuttle that visits other terminals may take longer than the hotel’s distance from the airport suggests.

What can I show a driver if I do not speak Chinese?

Show the exact Chinese address from your booking, followed by “请送我到这个地址。” (Please take me to this address.) For a pickup location, “请问,网约车上车点在哪里?” asks where the booked-car pickup area is. Keep the address visible; the phrase alone does not identify the property.

Should I book a train just after my flight lands?

Avoid treating a flight arrival time as a guaranteed connection. Check the actual terminal-to-station journey, baggage and entry procedures, and the ticket’s change conditions before committing. This is especially important when the train leaves from a city railway station rather than the airport.
